Do you often contemplate your job satisfaction and financial security? Do thoughts of pursuing a new career path linger in your mind, hindered by fear of the unknown?
I bet, like many others on Substack, you aspire to monetize your passion for writing. The dream: earning a livelihood by crafting words about a topic that captivates you or that you're an expert in.
Yet, here we all are, striving towards that goal. 😊 I wonder if the man seated by the boardwalk shares these aspirations.
His demeanor suggests introspection, resembling a figure in a tranquil painting. He sits beside his cart adorned with handmade baskets, reminiscent of an artwork by a revered ancient painter. If I had the talent, I'd paint him; alas, I rely on words, while my husband transforms him into a Manga character.
Let's dub him the "basket man," as his name eludes me. Though a small presence amidst the bustling scenery, his cart reveals intricate details upon closer inspection. A variety of baskets, each with a specific purpose, decorate his cart. They serve traditional roles in Thai households: for cooking sticky rice, for donations, and for drying fish and other foods.
These baskets, cherished by elderly Thai women in our neighborhood, appear more than mere souvenirs. The basket man also peddles traditional Thai brooms, neatly arranged on his self-constructed cart—a utilitarian marvel of bamboo sticks supporting smaller baskets, designed for effortless mobility. Notably, a horn announces his presence as he traverses the town's streets.
Does he carry a cash box? No, a bag slung over his shoulder serves as his repository for earnings. I stand beside him, admiring his patience as he awaits customers.
What occupies his thoughts as he sits there?
Does he contemplate alternate employment?
Does he find contentment in his life?
From an external perspective, it's hard to say, but I can only speculate.
Perhaps there's a lesson for us all: to practice patience and gratitude in our own lives.
Amidst our desires for more, we often overlook the blessings we already possess and the richness of our existence. Life's grass isn't necessarily greener elsewhere if we carry our negative thoughts with us. Let's cherish what we have and embrace the beauty of our journey thus far.
